Even a scholarship award fails to soften Gua's attitude. The Welsh farming background makes the misery almost bearable until her uncle removes her from Gua's clutches and places her in a French convent in London.
After an uncomfortable start Ginge settles down to life as a boarder in a school almost as severely discliplined as her home. She shines intellectually and as a young actress. The characters in this gripping autobiography is beautifully depicted.
The book ends dramatically with the outbreak of war, the end of schooldays and the death of Ginge's first boyfriend - shot down over France in 1940, but not before the story of their tender love affair is exquisitely detailed.
